The Sultanate of Johor was founded by Melaccan Sultan Mahmud's son Sultan Alauddin Riayat Shah in 1528. It was part of Melacca before the Portuguese captured it's capital in 1511. At its height, the Sultanate controlled modern-day Johor, Riau, territories stretching from river Klang to Linggi and Tanjong Tuan, and other islands on the east coast of the Malay peninsular, the Karimun island, the island of Bintan, Bulang, Lingga and Bungaran, Bengkalis, Kampar and Siak in Indonesia. During the colonial era, the mainland and Singapore were administered by the British while the islands and territories on the east coast of Sumatra by the Dutch until separately they became independent respectively.
