Once a land settled by ancient people known as the Balts and was at one time ruled by the Vikings.  German warlords captured this land in1230 and ruled it for three centuries.  By the end of 18th. century, Latvia was annexed by the Russians. Nazi Germany occupied Latvia from 1941 till 1944.  With the liberalization of the Soviet Unions in 1980, Latvia attained independence from the Russians on August 21 1991.
