The VOC was established in 1602 with the aim of sending ships to Asia to buy pepper and spices. During their long years of voyages, they also ventured to the New World which enable them to land in New York which they later called it the New Amsterdam. These copper duits were introduced as legal coinage in their newly discovered territory , earning it the title of " New York's First Penny  ".  Copper duits were also distributed in other territories in Asia like Ceylon, East Indies and Melacca.
