Old Stamps Of Dutch East Indies / Indonesia - Part I

The history of Indonesian postal administration was formally established on 27 Sep. 1945, but the history of Indonesian stamps started from 1 April 1864 when the 1st. Dutch East Indies stamps were released. Indonesian stamp is divided into 5 periods which are Dutch East Indies, Japanese Occupation, the war of independence, the beginning of independence and finally the new order and the present. Dutch 1st. postage stamps showed picture of King Willem III of Netherlands. Continued between 1864 till 1920 stamps designs showed picture of Kings and Queens of Netherlands. During the Japanese Occupation, many stamps were overprinted on Dutch colonial stamps. Japanese definitive began in 1943 depicting traditional houses, dancers, temples and paddy fields. During the war of independence, most stamps were overprinted with Rep. Indonesia or NRI or RI. Indonesia declared independence from the Dutch on 17 August 1945 and after that many definitive stamps were issued.
