In 1888, Sir Cecil Rhodes whose family name became the country name while spearheading British interests in Central Africa, was given mineral concessions by the local chiefs. In the same year, both Rhodesias were proclaimed as British sphere of influence. Southern Rhodesia was given self-rule in 1923 while Northern Rhodesia was transferred to the British colonial office in 1924 as a protectorate.
