On August the 8th. 1914, French and British forces invaded German Togoland and the Germans were forced to surrender on the 26th. of August 1916. Togoland was divided into French and British administrative zones. The Western Togoland which representes 1/3 of the former Togoland went to the British while the other 2/3 of the German Togoland went to the French forces. In December 1956, the residents of the British Togoland voted to join the Gold Coast as part of the new independent nation of Ghana.
