Dahomey became a French Protectorate in 1892. In 1948, Dahomey was made a Republic ( Republic of Dahomey ) and after that it was governed by Communist leaders and the name was changed to People's Republic of Dahomey. On the 1st. of August 1960, the Republic gained its full independence from the French and later again in 1975, it was renamed as The Republic Of Benin because the name was neutral and inclusive of the various ethnic groups in the country.
