On July 1884, all the present-day Cameroon and certain surrounding areas became a German colony spelt in German as Kamerun. German post office started issuing postal stamps in 1887. With the invasion of Cameroon in 1914, it was divided between the British and the French and known as British Cameroon and the French Cameroun. The French side became the present-day Cameroon while the British section became part of Nigeria and also Cameroon.
