Alsace is located on France's eastern border and on the west bank of Upper Rhine adjacent to Germany and Switzerland. This region is actually within the Republic of France. Alsace and Lorraine was occupied by Germany in 1940 during World War II. Although Germany never really annexed Alsace, it was incorporated into the Greater German Reich. During that time, Alsace was merged into the state of Baden while Lorraine with Saarland.
