The Penny Black was the world's first adhesive postage stamp issued in Britain on 06 May 1840 to be used in public postal system.  Sir Rowland Hill has been credited with  originating the basic concept of the modern postal service, including the invention of the adhesive postage stamp.  The Penny Black features the profile of Queen Victoria which was based on the engraved portrait of the young queen.  The word " Postage " appeared at the top of the stamp and " One Penny " at the bottom, indicating the amount that had been pre-paid for the transmission of the letter to which it was affixed.
