Armenia's first country name was Hayk and is situated around the highlands surrounding the legendary mountains of Ararat. The surrounding states called it Armenia which was derived from Aram ( the great grandson of Hayk's great grandson ) The Armenians were subjected to many foreign rules such as the Persian, Macedonia, Byzantine and Islam. The Seljuk Turks conquered Armenia in 1064. Armenia was later divided between the Ottoman and the Russians. This land regained independence in 1918 with the establishment of the Democratic Republic of Armenia and in 1991, the Republic of Armenia.
