Malaysian First Day Covers - Pearls - Issued 29 July 2015

Sabah seas are filled with many kinds of marine life including a type of mollusk known as oysters. Highly sought and hunted for its delicious flesh however a  valued jewel is hidden beneath its shell in what we know as pearl. The species used for pearl culture in Sabah is the Pinctada Maxima. Due to over-hunting and environmental pollution, the Sabah government has carried out extensive research to produce cultured pearls via pearl oyster farming. An area in the sea of Semporna has been designated to produce cultured pearls which not only safe the pearl oysters from extinction but also produces one of the world's finest and largest south sea pearls.
