Samudra Pasai, also known as Samudra and Pasai was a Muslim harbour kingdom of the north east coast of the Sumatra island of Indonesia from 13th. to 15th. centuries.  It was believed the word Samudra was derived from a Sanskrit word meaning the ocean.  According to " Hikayat Raja-Raja Pasai " it was Merah Silu who saw an ant as big as a cat, caught it and ate it and named the place Samandara. King Merah Silu was later converted to Islam and known as Malik Ul Shah .  That happened in 1267 as the beginning of the Sultanate and lasted until 1521 when the kingdom was destroyed and looted by the fierce Majapahit of Java island.
