History of India dates back to almost 75 000 years ago with evidence of early human activities in certain regions of India. The Indus valley civilization which existed around 3 300 - 1300 BC was considered the first civilization in India.  The texts of Vedas  from the Vedic period ( 1 500 - 500 BC ) which led to the foundation of Hinduism were as old as the ones found in the Egyptian and Mesopotamian civilizations. A large number of kingdoms mushroomed across India as far back as1 000BC which were known as Mahajanapadas. In 1526, Babur a grandson of the Great Ghengis Khan conquered the whole of India and established a Mughal Dynasty which lasted until 1857.  From 16th. century, Europeans powers such as the Portuguese, Netherlands, French and Britain established their  trading ports in many parts of India and finally became their colonies. Britain ruled larger parts of India compared to other rivals with the coming of British East India Company in 1600 and lasted until independence in 1947.
