Old Stamps Of Belgium Congo / Now Democratic Republic Of The Congo / Formerly Known As Zaire ( Africa )

Belgian colonization began when King Leopard II  founded the Congo Free State, a corporate state run solely by the King of Belgium. Reports of wide-spread murder and torture in the rubber plantations, led the Belgium government to seize the colony from the King and established the Belgian Congo. Belgium granted the Congo its independence in 1960.  In 1965, Joseph Mobutu renamed the country as Zaire.   When Rwanda invaded  Zaire in the first Congo-War, Laurent Desire Kabila took power and renamed the country back to the Democratic Republic Of The Congo ( do not confuse with French Republic Of Congo ).
