Old Stamps Of The United States ( Great American Leaders ) - Part I

Postal history of the U.S started with the delivery of stampless letters whose cost was borne by the receiving person and followed later by pre-paid letters which finally became compulsory for all letters to bear nationally issued adhesive stamps . After the Revolutionary War, a national postal system was established. The U.S government introduced the first adhesive stamps in the denominations of 5 cents and 10 cents on July 1st. 1847 and was made mandatory the use of stamps on letters in 1855. U.S stamps of early issues showed face or bust of American presidents or famous statesmen. When the use of stamps became a good revenue source, the post office started issuing commemorative stamps like important national expositions and anniversaries of significant American historical events.Today besides self-adhesive stamps, post office clerks now use postal value indication ( PVI ) which are computer labels, instead of stamps. Besides PVI, the United States post office now sells non-denominated " forever " stamps for use on first class and international mails.
