Old Stamps Of Australia - Part I

The six self-governing Australian colonies such as New South Wales ( 1850 ), Victoria ( 1850 ), Tasmania ( 1853 ), Western Australia ( 1854 ), Queensland ( 1860 ) and South Australia ( 1855 ) operated their own postal service and stamps. When they found the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901, all postal service became a Commonwealth responsibility. The Commonwealth's Postmaster General's Department became effective on 1st. March 1901 while stamps of the 6 colonies continued to be valid until 14th February 1966 when the introduction of the decimal currency made all stamps bearing the earlier currency invalid for use. Australian philately proper begins on 2nd. January 1903 with the issue of a red 1d ( one penny ) Kangaroo and map and was the first definitive stamp with the sole nomenclature " Australia ". With the accession of George VI in 1936 until the early 1970, Australian definitive featured the monarch, Australian fauna and flora . However in the late 1950s the depiction of the monarch was now on Elizabeth the II. Australian commemorative stamp was issued on 09 May 1927 featuring the first Parliament House in Canberra. The first Christmas stamp appeared on 06 November 1957.
