Upper Silesia is the southeastern part of the region of Silesia. In the 9th. century, Upper Silesia had been part of the Greater Moravia. Then it came under the Dutchy of Bohemia, and the Piast Kingdom of Poland ( 990 - 1336 ), the Holy Empire ( 1336 - 1526 ), the Habsburg Monarch ( 1526 - 1742 ), the Kingdom of Prussia ( 1742 - 1871 ), and then the German Empire ( 1871 ). After World War I, many thousands square miles of the territory were returned back to the state of Poland which had disappeared as a result of the Third Partition of Poland in 1795. Shown here are some of the stamps used during German occupation of the region.
At the end of WWI, a plebiscite was called upon the Schleswig region to determine the border between Germany and Denmark. In 1920, the plesbicite for zone I became part of Denmark while zone II and III with more German population remained with Germany
