Nazi Germany main concerns in establishing control over the Danube Basin including its river were economic in nature. To gain control of the river, the Nazi annexed Austria, invaded Yugloslavia and the Soviet Union where the river flowed and made treaties with the Kingdom of Romania and Hungary ( 1938 - 1940 ).
" The Danube is the waterway which leads into the very heart of the continent, and for this reason, in a Europe united by us, it will have to be regarded as a German river and must be controlled by Germany. "
