Ukraine was a center of East Slavic culture in the middle ages before being divided by many foreign powers.   People from various origins migrated there since 5000 BC. This country was known as " Kievan Rus " until the 16th. century.   Mongol conquest ended the Kievan power.   Ukraine asked the Czar of Russia to protect the country against Poland.and from that event onwards Ukraine was absorbed into the Russian Empire.   After the Russian Revolution, Ukraine declared its independence on 28  Jan.1918.  In 1920, Ukraine became a Soviet Republic.  It achieved independence after the disintegration of the Soviet Union in 1991.
