Coins of Albania
Coins of the young state of Albania.
Although the exact origin of the Albania is not entirely known, records exist that trace their evolution from the ancient Illyrians. They were daring fighters and known for their bravery in wars. Being greatly influenced by the Greeks, the Illyrians began to evolve politically and economically. Progress was hampered by what would become a continuous strings of foreign attacks. Rome attacked and defeated the Illyrians in 229 BC and ruled for six centuries. When the Byzantines controlled Albania, Illyrians suffered devastation from the Visigoths, Huns and Ostrogoths. When the Byzantine weaken, Illyrian was conquered by the Ottoman Turks in 1388. With so many up and down in history, finally Albania became a free nation in 1992.
